Chapter 16

Seline

It’s the next few days of listlessness, this knowing that every moment of my life is now finite, that has me seeking out the mayor.

“A three-month notice?”

Mayor Hamrington looks displeased.

“I don’t want to stay here anymore.” I look around his lavish office.

“If this is about your salary, I can raise it—"

“It’s not about that,” I assure him, but he is clearly not satisfied.

“Seline, with everything going on, I need you now more than ever. The bar—"

“You can find someone else to be your eyes and ears,” I tell him lightly. “You’ve done a lot for me, mayor, which is why I’m willing to put in a three-month notice.”

Also, because I need to save up a little.

With the new landlord, the rent has gone down, to everyone’s surprise. There are also renovations being done as well to the building, which would have been nice if I were still going to keep living there.

The mayor gives me an annoyed look. “You really do like leaving me high and dry, don’t you? No shame whatsoever?”

I just smile at him.

He sighs. “I guess asking you to stay is a little selfish of me.”

Reaching down into one of the cabinets, he takes out a checkbook. He scribbles something on it before sliding it to me. I take it, and when I see the amount on it, my eyes grow wide as saucers.

“This should allow you to move anywhere you want and live without working for one year.”

“W-what?”

His voice is quiet now. “I have my ear to the ground, you know.”

I pale.

“If I knew of any way to save you, I would, Seline,” He has never spoken this gently to me before. “Unfortunately, your situation is something I have no influence over.”

My eyes water. “This is a lot you’re doing for me.”

He clears his throat. “Yes, well, I value good employees, and you have been nothing short of consistent. And I have to admit I’ve grown quite fond of you.”

When I leave, I stand outside the town hall and close my eyes. I always thought that I had no one in my corner, but maybe it was my own insecurities not allowing me to see all the people who care so much about me. Gina, Marie, Lacy, the mayor.

My heart aches, but with this one check, the mayor has taken away my worry about my savings. My lips curve softly.

This one year might not be as bad as I predicted.
